Stay current on how construction activities will affect your travels

Gateway Transformation

We recommend arriving at the airport two hours prior to your scheduled departure time - at the ticket counter no less than 90 minutes prior to departure. This additional time will ensure that you have ample time to park, arrive at the terminal, check in for your flight and proceed through the passenger security screening checkpoint in time to board your flight.

Here is how the current phase of our Gateway Transformation project may impact your upcoming travel experience.

Passenger Impact:

  • The remodeled Grand Hall, east and west restrooms, and kids play area are OPEN!
  • The west business center is open.
  • The east business center is closed permanently and has been reopened as a new family restroom!
  • Two way passage between the Concourse A and Concourse B sides of the terminal is maintained in front of the Police Office. The Grand Hall is partially impacted for high ceiling work.  Table and chair configurations have been adjusted to maximize seating in the open areas.
  • A temporary hallway has been constructed approaching Concourse A. Queue lines have been adjusted with access maintained.
  • All concessions and retail areas remain open and accessible. Additional signage has been installed to help identify these facilities.
  • Concourse entrances and TSA screening operations are maintained.

Here are some renderings of the finished project.

Roadway Construction

We are not currently aware of any roadway construction activities that will impact travel around the airport campus.

Airport Viewing Park

In 1995, the airport opened the viewing park at its current location on Kraft Avenue north of 52nd Street. Over the years it has become a popular spot for area workers to take a lunch break, or for families to pack a picnic and enjoy some time outdoors watching airplanes. Grand Rapids Kids Magazine voted the park the “Best Kept Secret in Grand Rapids” (July 2015). With its growth in popularity comes the need for an expansion. The current park has just over 50 parking spaces, picnic tables and trash receptacles for picnickers, and portable bathroom facilities. This renovation will add a pavilion, permanent restrooms, new seating areas, expanded parking, bus parking, and more.

The Airport Viewing Park should remain open during construction, but parking will be limited and — should closings occur — they will be posted via the Airport’s social media accounts.
